View flipnotes in emulator with FSPDSNitro

2024-09-04 17:04:12 (3 month(s) ago)

The portability of the flipnote studio player FSPDS is contrained by the fact that it depends on an filesystem to scan flipnotes and store the app data. Due to this reason, FSPDS could only run on flashcards or modded hardware. However, one month ago I have released a tool called FSPDSNitro that allows embedding flipnotes into the ROM itself, making it possible to view flipnotes in emulators that support NitroFS. Check this link for more details.

FSPDS : Made it to 1.0

More than two years and a half in development, the homebrew app that brings flipnotes to any DS console is no longer just a proof of concept. FSPDS has received a new user interface and an improved player, along with more useful features, including browsing the filesystem, playback options and viewing flipnote metadata such as the date and author names. My plans for the future of this application is creating an export option to different media formats and, if possible, a flipnote share/multicast feature via DS Download play.

Confirmed: FSPDS performs way better on an actual flashcard

Following the file loading time related concerns, the Flipnote Studio Player homebrew application has been tested on a real Nintendo DS Lite on a load of more than 1000 flipnotes of sizes ranging from 3KB up to 985KB. The chunk-based file loading system actually performed hundreds of times better than expected on a real R4i Gold Pro 2015 flashcard. The flipnotes list list updates instantly and the file size is obtained really fast, compared to the tens of seconds required for the same task running in the emulator. Some small lag may still happen when exploring the flipnotes list due to a "background provider" which constantly analyzes the list and tries to fill in the requested/yet not loaded data.

Work on FSPDS is postponed until I have the chance do a hardware test

Since the dynamic filesystem loader has started to take form, there appeared speed issues on loading individual files from populated directories (>500 files). At least, this happens under DeSmuME's R4 flashcard emulation. I have to try this on hardware as soon as possible in order to decide on how to fix this issue
